Thanksgiving-Inspired Farm Stays

My cousin asked me whether a farm stay is actually worth it for Thanksgiving, or whether it is just a normal Airbnb with a goat standing near it, and I said I would find out properly and report back. So this is the report, written from a laptop in a shared kitchen in Leiden where the heating clicks off at eleven, during an exchange year that has taught me more about fare buckets than about any of my actual courses.

Farm stays over the holiday are not really a travel genre. They are a seasonal pivot: hay bales, a long table, somebody’s grandmother’s stuffing recipe, a lantern walk to the barn. Which means they sell out in an order that has nothing to do with how good they are.

First I work out whether I am flying at all

Before any farm enters the picture I price the trip, because most Thanksgiving farm country sits two hours from a real airport and the ground leg can quietly cost more than the flight. Last year I ran Austin to Burlington for the Wednesday before, and the Wednesday itself was fine while the Tuesday was absurd, and I could see both in the same grid on the site with the month view, which is the only reason I caught it. The date you buy does not set the price; the day you fly does, and the Sunday and Monday after Thanksgiving are their own small catastrophe.

For a route where the drive is under four hours, I will say plainly that the car wins and I do not book anything. Before I pay, this is the order I go in:

  • Is the farm reachable without a rental, or does it need a car I have not priced
  • Does the minimum stay swallow the holiday itself, not just the weekend
  • What is the cancellation window, in days, in writing
  • Is there a cleaning fee per night or per stay
  • Can I get there on hand luggage, because I am not checking a bag for three days

That second bullet has killed two bookings for me. A farm in the Hudson Valley wanted four nights, arriving Wednesday, which sounds generous until you realise you are paying for the Thursday twice.

Then I stop looking at farms and look at the map

Most Thanksgiving farm stays sit near a spoke, not a hub, so the routing matters more than the price. A positioning flight into a secondary city, then a coach, then a borrowed truck, is usually the honest version of the trip. If a farm is advertising itself near a hub, it is near the hub the way my Leiden flat is near Amsterdam, which is to say forty minutes and a connection. Check the IATA code of the airport they name, not the city, because the city name is doing marketing work.

For the Texas end of things, where a lot of my family’s holiday driving happens, I check Kupi.com for Houston – Corpus Christi tickets when a farm stay near the coast comes up, mostly to see whether the ground leg is even rational before I fall in love with a barn.

What the farm itself has to prove

The listing photos tell you almost nothing, because a lantern at dusk flatters everything. What I want is the arrival window, since most of these places are somebody’s actual house and they will not be standing at a gate at 23:40 because your through-fare got rebooked. Ask what happens if you land late. Ask whether the meal on Thursday is included or a surcharge, because roughly half the farms I have looked at charge separately for the dinner and do not put that in the headline price, and forty euros per person changes the maths on a trip that was already marginal.

I have not stayed on one yet, so I will admit the limits of this. What I have done is book four of them and cancelled three, mostly on the minimum stay.

The variable that actually decides it is not the farm, the food or the flight. It is whether you can get there and back without a car you have to rent for four days to use for two.
