Want to learn Telugu? Great! First thing – you need the letters. Telugu is super pretty. People speak it in two big states in India. You hear it in movies too. And songs!

The Telugu script looks round. Smooth too. Might seem hard at first. But wait – once you get it, it’s easy! The letters have clear shapes. Practice a bit. You’ll read and write fast.

This guide uses simple words. No hard grammar stuff. No big terms. Just easy words. Clear examples too.

You’ll learn:

  • Telugu vowels
    • Telugu consonants (the other letters)
    • How to say each letter
    • How to write them nice
    • How letters join up
    • Daily practice tips

Ready? Let’s start!

What Are Telugu Letters?

Telugu script has a name. It is Telugu lipi. Like Hindi, it comes from old Brahmi script. Telugu has:

  • 16 vowels
    • 3 extra vowels
    • 36 consonants
    • Lots of mixed sounds

In Telugu, letters are called aksharalu. That’s their word for it.

Each letter makes its own sound. When vowels and consonants mix? They make new shapes. This happens in Indian languages. Normal stuff.

Don’t stress. It gets easy fast.

Telugu Vowels

Telugu Vowels

Vowels are achchulu. These sounds come out smooth. No air blocking.

Here are the 16 main ones:

అ
ఆ
ఇ
ఈ
ఉ
ఊ
ఋ
ౠ
ఎ
ఏ
ఐ
ఒ
ఓ
ఔ
అం
అః

How to Get Telugu Vowels

Hey, don’t learn all at once! Start with these basic ones:

అ (a)
ఆ (aa)
ఇ (i)
ఈ (ee)
ఉ (u)
ఊ (oo)

These pop up everywhere. Know these six? You can read lots!

Look at these:

అమ్మ
Mom

ఆవు
Cow

ఇల్లు
House

ఈగ
Fly

ఉంగరం
Ring

ఊయల
Swing

Vowels change how words sound. Big time! So learn them first.

Extra Vowel Sounds

Telugu has some special ones:

ఋ
ౠ
అం
అః

Not super common. But still good to know.

Like:

ఋ
Shows up in old words.

అం
Makes a nose sound.

అః
Used in fancy old texts.

You’ll see them sometimes. Good to know!

Telugu Consonants

Consonants are hallulu. They need vowels to work right.

Here they are:

క
ఖ
గ
ఘ
ఙ

చ
ఛ
జ
ఝ
ఞ

ట
ఠ
డ
ఢ
ణ

త
థ
ద
ధ
న

ప
ఫ
బ
భ
మ

య
ర
ల
వ

శ
ష
స
హ

ళ
క్ష
ఱ

That’s 36 consonants. Looks like a lot? Each has its own shape. Its own sound too.

How Telugu Consonants Work

Every consonant has a vowel inside. Like:

క = ka
గ = ga
ట = ta
ద = da

Want just the consonant? Add a tiny mark called virama.

క్
Just k. No vowel.

This helps when letters join up.

Easy Examples with Consonants

కలము
Pen

గుడి
Temple

చెట్టు
Tree

తలుపు
Door

పుస్తకం
Book

రాము
Ramu (a name)

వాన
Rain

These words use basic stuff. Know the letters? Reading gets easy!

Vowel Signs in Telugu

When vowels join consonants? They change shape. These are gunintalu.

Take క (ka) for example:

కా
Same shape but aa sound

కి
Tiny i mark

కీ
Long ee mark

కు
u mark on the right

కూ
Long oo mark

కె
Short e mark

కే
Long e mark

కై
Ai mark

కొ
Short o mark

కో
Long o mark

కౌ
Au mark

Learn bit by bit.

Why Telugu Looks Round

Notice something? Telugu letters are curved. Soft. Round. Why? Old people wrote on palm leaves. Sharp lines would tear them!

So Telugu became gentle. Round script.

Makes it pretty to look at!

How to Write Them

It goes left to right.

Tips:

  • Go slow
    • Draw big shapes first
    • Write each letter five times
    • Do vowels first
    • Then basic consonants
    • Make nice curves
    • Keep letters wide

Writing Telugu? Like drawing! Take practice. Gets smooth fast.

How to Read Them

Reading them is easy when you know:

Each consonant has a vowel inside
Vowel signs change sounds
Mixed letters join shapes
